Following Jesus’ death, Peter and the apostles were hauled before the Jewish council for preaching the gospel despite having been ordered not to. The council were minded to kill them, but a Pharisee named Gamaliel advised against this course. His speech to the council appears to involve an error. (more…)

Was Bethsaida a village or a city?

Bethsaida was the home of Andrew and Simon Peter, fishermen who Jesus called from their nets to become “fishers of men”. But was Bethsaida just a small fishing village, or something more? (more…)

Who spoke to Moses from the burning bush?

Was John the Baptist Elijah?

In Jesus’ time, the Jews were not just waiting for the Messiah, but also for the return of Elijah before the Messiah. There is some confusion in the gospels as to whether Elijah returned in John the Baptist. (more…)

For how much did David buy the land for the altar?

When David had angered God by taking a census of the people of Israel, God sent a plague as a punishment. Seventy thousand died, but God paused before sending the plague against Jerusalem, and instructed David to build an altar on the threshing floor of a Jebusite. David did so, and Jerusalem was spared the plague.

The Jebusite is called Araunah in 2 Samuel, and Ornan in 1 Chronicles, but these are sufficiently similar to be accepted as two different versions of the same name rather than two different names. However, the accounts do give two different prices that David paid. (more…)

Who bought the tomb in which Joseph was laid?

Both Joshua and Acts contain descriptions of Joseph’s resting place. In each, Joseph’s body was interred at Shechem, in a tomb bought from the descendants of Hamor. The accounts disagree, however, concerning who bought the tomb. (more…)

Did Asa remove the high places?

Asa was one of Judah’s better kings, doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. He achievements included cleansing Judah of various elements of pagan worship, removing altars, idols, and the like. There is, however, some confusion concerning whether he removed the “high places”. (more…)
